Bronx native Ari Hest played the LIVE@FYI stage on Wednesday, February 13th and 1:02 p.m.

Many singer-songwriters toil for months on their Macs, trying to make a demo that sounds polished enough to score them a record deal with a major label. But Ari Hest has done the exact opposite, as he continues to defy the conventional route of a musician.

Already signed to a major, he opted out of his label deal so that he could have more control over his art. He then embarked on his ambitious ‘52’ project, during which he spent all of last year immersed in an unprecedented effort – to write, record, produce and release one new song per week, for 52 weeks in a row. Now, he will self-release his new studio CD, ‘Twelve Mondays,’ on March 10th. The album features reworked versions of 12 fan-selected songs, culled from the past year’s extraordinary output.

It’s a renegade path that reveals the ‘New Music Industry’ at its best, and allows Hest’s impressive work to find the audience he wants it to find. ‘Twelve Mondays’ showcases the diversity of Hest’s songwriting – from the haunting, minimasterpiece “Broken Voices” to the USA TODAY ‘Listen Up Music Pick’ “The Weight,” which was praised as a “poignant, acoustic reverie…” — From the wistful travelogue “Ride The Brake” to the radio-friendly “Dead End Driving,” it’s a remarkable mix that’s distinguished by the intelligence, nuance and range of Hest’s material. Add to that the fact that these songs were written amid the week-to-week gauntlet of ‘52’, and it’s all the more impressive.

Sandrine

Australian born and New York City based singer-songwriter Sandrine performed songs from her album “Dark Fades Into The Light" released through Nettwerk Music Group at LIVE@FYI on February 20th at 5:00 p.m. EST.

Born in the Blue Mountains near Sydney in Australia, Sandrine was singing and performing from an early age with her musical family. Signed to Sony Australia in 2003, she released her debut album, "Trigger", in the spring of 2004. The album’s title track was the first single and reached the Top 20 of the Australian charts. Encouraged by this success, she decided to move to the US and record her second album with producer Malcolm Burn, known for his work with Daniel Lanois, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Chris Whitley and many others. Inspired by the beautiful setting of Burn’s studio outside of Woodstock, NY, Sandrine wrote and recorded her sublime second album, "Dark Fades Into Light". Feeling like she’d found her musical home, she decided to stay in the states. "Dark Fades Into The Light" was released by Nettwerk in 2008 and became an instant success in France with the hit single “Where Do We Go”. Her music became even more well-known in Europe and the US thru the placement of her songs in numerous movies, television shows and commercials.

Jenny Owen Youngs

Jenny Owen Youngs steps in front of the LIVE@FYI audience on February 21st at 7:00 p.m. EST. Youngs, a New York based singer-songwriter who has received much critical acclaim, performed songs from her release, “Batten The Hatches.”

Coming up strong behind R. Stevie Moore as the most talented singer/songwriter to be based in the nondescript bedroom community of Montclair, NJ, Jenny Owen Youngs looks like Lindsay Lohan's indie-kid younger sister (though, ironically, the baby-faced Youngs is in fact about a half-decade older than the hard-partying actress-singer) but sounds like an entirely successful fusion of Liz Phair's perceptive and brashly funny lyrics and the orchestrated folk-pop of Regina Spektor and Erin McKeown, with just a hint of Nellie McKay's jazzy cabaret leanings and Cat Power's throaty, confessional angst. Born in New Jersey in 1981 and raised in the usual suburban surroundings, Youngs first picked up the guitar at the age of 14 and attended the music program at the State University of New York at Purchase at a time when that previously obscure art school was single-handedly populating what would become the entire New York "anti-folk" scene: besides Youngs and Spektor, Jeffrey Lewis, Langhorne Slim, and the Moldy Peaches' Adam Green and Kimya Dawson were all SUNY-Purchase graduates. Maintaining a friendship with Spektor, who chose Youngs as her opening act on the tours following her breakthrough album, Soviet Kitsch, Youngs wrote and recorded her debut album, 2005's self-released Batten the Hatches. Although the album garnered generally positive reviews, it attracted little notice until one of its highlights, the rueful "Fuck Was I," was used in the second-season opener of the popular cable sitcom Weeds. Signing with the Canadian indie Nettwerk Records, Youngs released a remixed and repackaged version of Batten the Hatches in early 2007. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

Josh Kelley

Singer-songwriter Josh Kelley's path is one driven through Georgia dirt, Hollywood Hills, and recently landing him in the heart of Nashville. Kelley discovered his musical talents at age 11, when he started a band with his younger brother, Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum, exploring the musical influences of the South were they grew up.

During his college days Kelley wrote his first hit "Amazing" which lead him to a recording contract with Hollywood Records. His debut album, For The Ride Home, was released in 2003 to critical-acclaim and his song "Amazing" soared to no. 5 on the pop charts. Following the release of his sophomore album, Almost Honest, Kelley launched his own label DNK records, which became the home for his following four albums, Just Say The Word, Special Company, Backwoods (and iTunes-exclusive release), and To Remember (a Target-exclusive release).

Josh Kelley has maintained a high media profile over the past 4 years, appearing on the Emmy Award-winning NBC talk show Ellen, performing on Good Morning America, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Regis & Kelly, Carson Daly, E! Network's E! News, Daily 10, and EXTRA! Print coverage in People Magazine, Us Weekly, Billboard, Life & Style, OK! Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Radar, Paste among others. Several of his self-penned songs were featured in primetime TV shows including Smallville ("Almost Honest" and "Cain and Able"), Scrubs (digital soundtrack), Brothers and Sisters ("Opposite of Me"), The Hills ("Miles Away") and What About Brian ("Lady of Mine").

In September of 2009 Josh Kelley signed with MCA Nashville, a Universal Music Group imprint. He is currently in the studio recording his first country album and is expected to release his debut single later this year.

Priscilla Ahn

Alt-country trio Backyard Tire Fire stepped in front of the LIVE@FYI cameras on Wednesday, April 2nd at 3:30 p.m. EST.

Okay, here’s the skinny: The scheming corporate vampires and piggy-bankers have waddled away in a silent-but-deadly cloud after gobbling their fills at the public trough, leaving the rest of us poor schmos to pick the corn outta their poop and call it lunch. The whole stinkin’ economy is burning with the eternal, icy blue flame of corruption, and we’re down here with…what?

LIFE, for one great big thing—HEART and SOUL and ROCK’N’ROLL, and we got Ed Anderson and his able co-conspirators in Backyard Tire Fire to remind us that ALL OF THAT counts for way more than all the high-ticket stuff you can sneak out the back door.

With their fifth full-length disc, Good To Be, Backyard Tire Fire have achieved one of those big-time, long-haul records that matter far more than the sum of its considerable parts—and not via grandiose, larger-than-life lyrical imagery but through blue-collar, common sense miniatures that remind us of the simple beauty present in mundane, daily, person-to-person experience—a reminder that the hard work and struggle that these times are so dead-set about avoiding are the only actual treasures, the only worthwhile endeavors that bear fruit of substance.

Which is NOT to say that Good To Be is yet another one of those one-dimensional, granola-rootsy, rustic Americana takes on post-Uncle Tupelo barn-board rock; there is a taste of that, to be sure, but Anderson & Co. have spread the stylistic court with a rich, ever-expanding palette of aural rock ‘n’ roll colors and textures that tap into bouncy, Kinks-meet-Squeeze Brit pop-rock, Tom Petty-styled Southern rock, Beatle-esque majesty, intimate balladry, chiming folk-rock and heartland/populist chest-pounders. Bearing a consistent message of empathy, humanity and hope, Good to Be is a triumph of Anderson’s own thirteen year journey as a rock and roller.

Based in Bloomington, Illinois, Backyard Tire Fire have worked the national circuit tirelessly, sharing stages with fellow-travelers Cracker, the Reverend Horton Heat, Govt. Mule, Alejandro Escovedo, James McMurtry and Los Lobos.

Good To Be, due to drop February 16th on the band’s own Kelsey Street Records (distributed by Thirty Tigers/Red), was recorded in luxurious, hand-tooled analog with Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin producing.

“We met Steve when we opened for Lobos,” recalls Anderson. “That gig is referred to in the Tire Fire camp as ‘the gig that keeps on giving.’ Those guys were very kind to us and even had us sit in with them; Los Lobos dug us. Surreal…”

“Berlin got in touch with our management about producing us,” Anderson continues. “We decided on Type Foundry Studio out in Portland, Oregon—M. Ward records his stuff at the place. And that allowed Steve to be at home with his wife and kids while it took us out of our comfort zone…something we wanted to do.”

As with the previous four BTF beauties, Ed Anderson wrote all of the songs for GTB, but despite his muscular, all-world guitar wizardry and enviable command of a whisky/flannel vocal delivery hard-won through endless touring, the savvy Anderson found the recording process with Berlin to be a whole new—if exhilarating—ballgame. “Steve is an involved producer,” Ed asserts. “He had me rewriting lyrics, coming up with key changes, writing bridges, changing tunings—and recording lots of takes to get exactly what he wanted.”

“And he plays something on every track—be it a keyboard part or percussion; he’s all over the record. It was a challenging experience…and it generated good stuff.”

Anderson’s songs on Good To Be all exude an upbeat, glass-half-full positive approach, though not hardly of the delusional Pollyanna stripe.

Still, it’s abundantly clear that the overriding theme of this set is one of coming to terms with Life as a process—that the experience, the journey and its missteps are to be valued even above end-goals; in fact, that the very struggle itself may be the prize.

Ed’s own personal transformation/acceptance peeks out in the manic, tightly-wound opener, “Roadsong #39,” a rugged, visceral salute to the funk and stink of the daily rock ‘n’ roll road grind—“it’s sweaty and it’s smoky and it’s ripe and it’s rock and roll.”

Tracks 2-6 comprise a masterful, tender, hook-laden song cycle exploring third-person, slice-of-life experiences loaded with more missteps than a yard full of rakes, highlighted by “Food for Thought,” an impossibly lovely tune that asks “what you gonna do with your stuff when you’re gone?/Cuz when you’re through and your time has come/and you think you’ve had your fun/well all that really matters is what you’ve done…”

After “Hell and Back” pledges undying love over rocky terrain, the final third of the disc picks up the rock-life thread again, as the elevating, empowering title cut folds into “A Thousand Gigs Ago” and “Piss and Moan,” forming a self-effacing trilogy summing up a laundry list of the usual road warrior bitches even as they celebrate the small joys of the doing and the surviving to do it all again.

Good To Be winds out with the beautiful “Once Upon a Time,” a sweet benediction pledging steadfast support as the lights go dim.

Good stuff, indeed.

Like their aromatic namesake, Backyard Tire Fire have grown from a smoldering, localized slow burn to an insistent, overriding funky presence that’s spreading and refuses to be snuffed or ignored.

Well-placed friends have emerged on the field of battle; Jim Heath (a/k/a the Rev. Horton Heat) called BTF “one of the best and coolest bands out there.”

Cracker’s Johnny Hickman added, “My favorite band right now is Backyard Tire Fire; they sometimes remind me of early Wilco, Son Volt and Flaming Lips—they are my earworm these last few months.”

Jimbo Mathus of Squirrel Nut Zippers is a big fan, and Govt. Mule’s Warren Haynes has invited BTF to his 2009 Xmas Jam festival.

BTF plans to be on the road fulltime in 2010, beginning with a 50 market national tour that they’ll be headlining from February through May.

Still, there’s no doubt about it—Life is tough, and there’s precious few indicators that the road is any smoother over the horizon, so it’s a powerful, too-rare thing to be reminded that the hard knocks, bumps and bruises can serve as perfect frames for the incandescent joys that pop up in-between, and that to be able to feel it all may very well be what this mortal coil is all about.

We’re alive, dammit, and it’s Good To Be…so rock on.

Richard Julian

EMI/Manhattan recording artist Richard Julian performed at 3:00 p.m. EST on Monday, April 7th. The New York based songwriter/vocalist/guitarist released his second major label album, Sunday Morning In Saturday’s Shoes and has been hailed by Randy Newman, Bonnie Raitt and Norah Jones as one of the best songwriters in America.

Girls Need Attention, Richard Julian’s new album, is a musical atonement: vulnerable, honest, funny, and painfully direct as it chronicles an ill-fated love affair. “I don't know how to not write confessionally... the songs always feel like a shopping cart that veers in that direction no matter which way I try to steer it.” This, Julian's Compass Records debut and first album since 2008's Sunday Morning in Saturday's Shoes, still serves up the occasional helping of his razor-sharp wit but ultimately reveals the singer at his most emotionally-charged. “This is by far the most raw I've ever been on an album,” says Julian, and his uncloaked narration is served well by lean and elegant arrangements.

Recorded at Norah Jones's home studio,Girls Need Attention features stellar accompaniment from Nels Cline (Wilco) on guitar, Jolie Holland on box fiddle, and Sasha Dobson on vocals. The backing band, who was “essentially paid in fine tequila”, says Julian, a self-professed food and drink aficionado, contains such luminaries as Lee Alexander (who also produced the album), Tim Luntzel (bass) and Dan Rieser (drums), and is sparingly augmented throughout with keyboards (Dred Scott), baritone guitar, (Steve Elliot) french horn (Louis Schwadron), tuba (Marcus Rojas), and bass clarinet (Doug Wieselman). This star-studded cast is nothing out of the ordinary for Julian, who has spent the last few years touring with the likes of Norah Jones, Bonnie Raitt, Josh Ritter, Roseanne Cash, and Suzanne Vega.

Mutlu

April 16th brought EMI/Blue Note’s Mutlu to For Your Imagination’s studios at 1:00 p.m. EST. Signed to Manhattan Records after a tour with Amos Lee, his sound is described as a ‘clever blend of soul, reggae, hip-hop and Brazilian jazz.’

Soul comes in many shapes and sounds and comes at you from a hundred different angles and places. Philadelphia’s got an overabundance of it. Always had (thank you Gamble & Huff), Always will. Must be something in the water.

Mutlu Onaral must have drunk a whole lot of that water growing up. He may be more R & F (rhythm & folk) than R & Blue. You can even add the bounce of the Brazilian and the sway of the Jamaican in his tunes. But the 27 year old singer, instrumentalist and composer, known to everyone as Mutlu, has always sounded as if he’s been drunk on the Philly punch that makes the funk flow.

From the intimate high and passionate lows of his voice, to the friendly wordplay of the lyrics to melodies soaked in percussion, soaring string sounds and the flicker of the Fender Rhodes, it’s as if you’re hearing Stephen Stills having breakfast with Stevie Wonder, lunch with Steely Dan and dinner with Daryl Hall; yet all in a unique groovy setting courtesy of pop’s newest most iconic voice.

By the time Mutlu got into college, he started digging on A Tribe Called Quest and other hip-hop artists. At the same time, he began developing a songwriting style that benefited from those artists. But mostly - from the sway of his melodies to the effervescence of his lyrics - he began to craft songs based on his own sense of joy.

Positivism is the hallmark of his lyrical aplomb. Even when Mutlu’s portraying the saddest of sorrows, he’s always ripe with hope.

That’s my thread – something that makes people feel good. Consciously or subconsciously there’s been a negative vibe running throughout the world lately. I wanted to go against that grain. I’m not always happy-go-lucky. But I wanted to channel my influences while taking people away from dwelling on their misery.”

To prove that he’s always been on the cheery side, Mutlu makes note of the oldest song on the record: “See What It Brings.” It was written when he was studying in college. “I just remember feeling down and I wanted to get out of it. So I wrote about the optimism of the future to help lift me from my doldrums.”

If Mutlu had only been around when we were in college. No sooner than he’d written that song Multu commenced to take part in Philly’s open mic singer-songwriter scene. With Philly being the melting pot it is, fitting in and moving quickly forward was an effortless exercise. Especially since he befriended then, some of the same people who are on LIVIN’ IT today, including co-songwriters Ben Arnold, Scot Sax, McGowan, Tony Reyes and Ojike and vocalists G. Love and Amos Lee. In fact, it was Lee who produced Mutlu’s 2006 eponymous EP.

Mutlu’s says it’s that thread – the Philly-centric, the spirit of collaboration – that makes LIVIN’ IT whole. “It’s not a concept record. But that sense of unity is what’s behind the album. With all its collaborators, the process reads like a hip-hop CD. “Damn I can’t believe you caught that” says Mutlu. “That’s exactly it. I might be coming primarily from R&B, but I wanted to take hip hop’s element of ‘collabo’ and bring it to my acoustic soul thing.”

To make LIVIN’ IT raw and silken, it was important to keep it tight.

Mutlu got multi-instrumentalist/producer T Bone-Wolk – famous for doing those things with Elvis Costello and Hall & Oates – to do as much with him.

In fact, save for Steve Holley playing drums, Sharon Little and Jazzfatnastees’ Mercedes Martinez singing backgrounds and a few friends collaborating on vocals; all the music played on LIVIN’ IT is T-Bone and Mutlu. That reflects the intimacy of tracks like the tender plea of “Think It Over” and the bounce of “Upside.”

Once you got things nice and intimate, you can bring in your pals.

Mutlu pulled in old friends Amos Lee, who co-wrote and sang on “Make It There,” and G. Love, who recorded his vocals and harmonica on “Shaky Ground” in-between dropping his kid at school and leaving for his tour, as well as new pal Raheem De Vaughn who duets with Mutlu on the caramel-coated “In Your Heart,” LIVIN’ IT’s closer.

Then there’s Daryl Hall who sang with Mutlu on the Philly-cream-cheese smooth, “See What It Brings”. “Hall & Oates were a huge influence; everything they did throughout the 70s in particular,” says Mutlu of the cosmic connection between them. “In the same way we had that immediate musical and personal connection what with both of us growing up in Philly, he seemed to have an immediate connection with my song.” It shows.

Multu doesn’t need collaborators to bring out the misty moods and slippery sunshine of his own voice. While “Hello Morning” radiates that first feeling of having to make sense of a bad situation through its aching-to-quaking lullaby vocals, “Think It Over” is his blessed out appreciation of all those things you have rather than all those things you want.

But it’s the title track (co-written with producer/songwriter Ojike) that radiates all that it is Mutlu – something that sends forth nothing but the positive in its ebullient vocals and brightly jazzy melody. “It’s my summer song – always stay up, never get down,” says Mutlu.

“Happiness will return again.”

David Moore

On Wednesday, April 23rd at 7:15 p.m. EST, LIVE@FYI put Indiana's David Moore in front of the cameras where he played his hit song, "Breaking You Down."

At the age of 26, composer and multi-instrumentalist David Moore has been quick to establish himself as a strong presence in New York's creative music community. In 2006, after receiving his BM from The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, David founded his own ensemble Bing and Ruth, a group whose current membership includes two clarinets, two female voices, piano, two cellos, contrabass, and percussion. The ensemble has since kept an active performance schedule and has released two albums, "Kentile Floors" (2007), and "Bing and Ruth" (2006). Notable performances from the band include two concerts for the Wordless Music Series (including one that additionally saw David take the stage alone to perform selections from J.S. Bach's "Goldberg Variations), an appearance at this past summer's WFMU festival, two shows for the Stochastic Brooklyn series at Barbes, and a live in-studio recording for WFMU. David was also awarded the 2009 MATA Festival Commission and a MATA Film Commission; both awards culminating with a new multimedia piece premiered by Bing and Ruth at the 2009 MATA Festival in New York City.

In addition to his national and international touring schedule, David performs regularly at many of New York's most established venues for new music and the avant-garde including The Stone, The Tank, (Le) Poisson Rouge, The Knitting Factory, Barbés, Issue Project Room, Center for Improvised Music, Zebulon, and the Brooklyn Lyceum. He is also well known for his penchant to give performances in unique spaces not normally associated with live music. In the past he has performed concerts in an abandoned meat locker, a chicken coop, a vacant apartment, a warehouse rooftop, and numerous art galleries.

Since relocating from Kansas in 2004, David has released four albums of original work. In addition to the pair from Bing and Ruth, he has two records documenting his compositions for solo piano; "Neighborhood Shifts" (2007) and "Book of Days" (2005). He has worked tirelessly as a composer for film and installation, and as both performer and composer has appeared on releases by a diverse roster of record labels including Velour, Palmetto, Brownswood, Because Music, and Kemado. David has appeared in or been featured by WNYC, WFMU, The New York Times, NPR, Downbeat, Pitchfork, Brooklyn Vegan, the Guardian, Jazzwise, Flavorpill, and the New York Post. He founded and runs the independent record collective 'Happy Talk', and recently completed work on a new Bing and Ruth album currently slated for release in 2010.

LIVE@FYI joined forces with JamNow to bring Blessid Union of Souls in front of the cameras on Friday, May 2nd. Best known for their Top Ten single “I Believe,” the Cincinnati-based quintet was on tour all summer following their visit to the studio.

What do you call a pop/rock band from the '90s with eight Top 40 hits, one of them reaching #1 in the U.S., Southeast Asia and England while becoming the 4th most played song of 1995; who's performed in Europe and the 50 states with The Goo Goo Dolls, Bon Jovi, Sean Kingston, Third Eye Blind, Sister Hazel, Huey Lewis and the News, Shania Twain, Vertical Horizon and with Mike and The Mechanics at two sell-out shows at Royal Albert Hall; had their songs performed in movies with Jodie Foster, Jim Carrey and Penny Marshall as well as TV shows like "Cold Case," "All My Children," "Dancing With The Stars" and "American Idol? ANSWER: BLESSID UNION OF SOULS. After rotating band members, management companies and record labels over the past few years, day one faithfuls lead singer/songwriter, Eliot Sloan and bassist Tony Clark along with six year vets Bryan Billhimer (guitars) and Shaun Schaefer (drums) are back with the band's seventh album, CLOSE TO THE EDGE by BLESSID UNION OF SOULS!

With the upcoming release of CLOSE TO THE EDGE on Torque Records, the band embarks on releasing a CD that is more indicative to what the four of them bring to the table musically. Taking eight tracks from their previously independent album, PERCEPTION, and adding four fresh new songs to the record, the band is back in full force with a new outlook on their careers and an innovative management company to guide them. After signing with Atlanta-based New Line Management, headed by Caleb Morgan, the band saw a light at the end of the tunnel that they had not seen in a long time. "Caleb brought a new sense of direction, energy, passion and excitement to the band that had been missing for a while now," says Billhimer. "I can't remember when the band felt this confident before. Even when we first hooked up with Blessid, there was a sense leadership that was missing that Caleb helped restore." Adds Clark, "it's great to be with a manager who says they're going to do something and then actually do it."

With an upcoming tour in the works along with other avenues of promotion, Blessid Union Of Souls fans can be reassured that they have not abandoned the songwriting integrity that helped establish them as one of the premier groups of the mid-to-late '90s. Their knack for simple, sing-along melodies can be heard in the instantly likable "I'll Be There" and their taste for intriguing subject matter is evident in songs like the opening track, "Back From The Dead," which is an emotional piece about recovery from addictions. "That one means a lot to us, especially Tony and I," admits Sloan. "He was the inspiration for that song."

As for Blessid's live show, it's as energetic as it was when their debut album, HOME, was released and certified Gold in 1995. Now as a four-piece, the band is more gripping and power than ever."

With a humble, not-so-rock-star attitude, radio friendly songs and an absolute love for their fans, Blessid Union Of Souls continues to defy the odds and stay afloat in this rocky and unpredictable music business. But with a new album on the horizon and tour dates to follow, the band doesn't apologize or complain about the climate of the industry. They just continue to do what they do best, write great songs and play great shows. If you want to check out a vintage pop rock band with an edge, make sure it's Blessid Union Of Souls.

Griffin House

Critically acclaimed songwriter Griffin House appeared on Tuesday, April 8th at 12:00 p.m. EST and performed songs from his latest album, Flying Upside Down. The Ohio native has been called one of the ‘best emerging songwriters in the United States” by CBS Sunday Morning.

Griffin House was born and raised in Springfield, Ohio. His father worked in a tire shop and his mother helped place children with foster families. In high school, the athletically-gifted House landed a role in a musical and was surprised to learn that he had a natural talent for singing. House bought his first guitar for $100 from a friend, turned down a golf scholarship to Ohio University and instead went to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and started to teach himself how to play the guitar and write songs.

House began writing and recording and issued his first independent release, Upland, in 2003. His music attracted attention from Nettwerk, a Vancouver-based management company and record label, and House partnered with the label's American branch to issue Lost & Found in 2004. In August 2004, on CBS Sunday Morning, music journalist Bill Flanagan (MTV/VH1) raved about Lost and Found, putting the newcomer on his short list of the best emerging songwriters in the U.S. “I bought House’s CD after a show in New York City,” said Flanagan, “and this never happens: I took it home and must have listened to it 20 times that weekend. I was knocked out.”

Several self-released albums followed, and in 2008 House released Flying Upside Down, produced by Jeff Trott and featuring Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench. House has released the majority of his records on his imprint label, Evening Records. House has toured extensively, opening for artists such as Ron Sexsmith, Patti Scialfa, Josh Ritter, John Mellencamp, and Mat Kearney. Since 2007 House has been a national headliner.

Singer-songwriter Jay Clifford dropped by on May 8th as part of his nationwide Spring Acoustic Tour. Jay performed songs from his recent debut Driving Blind.

Jay Clifford owns one of rock's supreme voices: a silky-smooth, soulful tenor that never sounds forced or ugly. He can belt it out at need (even unmiked), but there's none of that gravelly bellowing that often passes for pop singing. And he gives you as refined and totally original a product as you can find in his genre: tender, poetic lyrics; gorgeous melodies; and sophisticated harmonies." - Lindsay Koob, Charleston City Paper

Singer/songwriter Jay Clifford released his debut solo album Driving Blind on Sept. 4, 2007 on 33 and 1/3 Records. Full of emotionally evocative vocals and intriguing lyrics, Driving Blind showcases the maturation of a truly gifted artist. Jay makes his nest in Charleston, but his hauntingly ethereal voice and pitch-perfect compositions have flown around the world — as he once sang, "in the cathedrals of New York and Rome" — since his band, Jump Little Children went on hiatus in 2006. Jay's former band, Jump Little Children, had a deal with Breaking/Atlantic Records. In 2000, they released a record with the single "Cathedrals," which was a Top 10 AAA single that year (Elton John personally contacted the band to express his admiration of the song).

In 2002, Jump toured with Howie Day, who had just signed his deal with Epic Records. Although Howie had never co-written a song before, he was encouraged to try- Howie's first choice of co-writers was Jay Clifford. In their first session together, Jay co-wrote what materialized into 5 songs that were recorded on Howie's debut album, Stop All the World Now. Jay also traveled to London for the entire recording session for Stop All the World Now to contribute guitar and vocals. He then toured with Howie, playing guitar, on two international tours.

Jay has also co-written songs with Sean Lennon (Capitol), Robert Randolph, Mandi Perkins (Sony/BMG), and Peter of Peter, Bjorn and John (independent- Almost Gold). Australian Recording Industry Award winner Missy Higgins co-wrote her single "Ten Days" with Jay, and it peaked at number 12 on the ARIA charts. "Ten Days" was on Missy's The Sound of White, which won 7 ARIA awards that year, including Album of the Year. Jay has also worked with Sadler Vaden of Leslie (independent), Joel Hamilton of Working Title (Universal), and Michael Flynn of Slow Runner (independent).

In February 2007, Clifford set out for Los Angeles to record Driving Blind at Swing House Studios with producer Warren Huart, whom he'd met while working on Howie Day's upcoming Epic Records release. The impressive crew of musicians on Driving Blind include drummer Travis McNabb (Better Than Ezra, Sugarland), bassist Dan Rothchild (Beck, Fiona Apple), and guitarists Dave Levita (Alanis Morissette, Daniel Powter) and Greg Suran (Sunny Day Real Estate, Jewel). After three weeks in Huart's studio, plus a few additions in Clifford's own home studio, the record was mixed by Mark Needham (The Killers, Chris Isaak).

The Wood Brothers

On Friday May 16th at 3:35 p.m. EST, The Wood Brothers performed live at the FYI studio.

Oliver and Chris Wood grew up in Boulder, Colorado. Sons of a Poet and a Microbiologist, they both took up music. Oliver moved to Atlanta and became a southerner. Chris moved to New York City and became a Yankee. Now, after years of musical and geographical separation they have reunited.

While in Atlanta, Oliver soaked up the roots of blues, the soul of the south, and found he had a talent for writing and singing songs. His band, King Johnson (named after Freddy King and Robert Johnson) toured mostly in the southern states. Meanwhile, Chris was living in Manhattan playing everything from free jazz to rock and roll. This is where he met his band mates to form Medeski Martin & Wood.

Now The Wood Brothers have begun a collaboration that combines their shared childhood influences with everything they've learned since leaving home. Their music has a rootsy feel that blends blues, folk, and rock music in a guitar/bass duo.

The brothers’ new album, "Loaded" produced by John Medeski, was released on Blue Note Records, April 1, 2008.
